Types of Acrylic Signs

There are several types of acrylic signs available, each of which involves an image being printed onto a piece of acrylic.

Clear acrylic offers perfect transparency. The image can be printed on the front or the back of the acrylic. If printed on the front, the image takes on a matte finish but is exposed to any outdoor elements and can scratch easily. When the image is printed on the rear of the acrylic, it is fully protected and is given a glossy finish by the acrylic on top. However, the top surface of the acrylic is still prone to scratching.
Frosted acrylic is a translucent type of acrylic sign. It is more durable as it shows scratches far less easily than clear acrylic. Its translucency can add privacy to the space, making it a popular choice for spaces such as restrooms. On a frosted acrylic, the image can only be printed on the front. In fact, the way frosted acrylic diffuses light can make your design stand out more.
Milky acrylic is an opaque option. It allows some light to move through the acrylic, usually around 20-30%. It adds a decorative touch to the room in which it is placed, appearing softer on the eye than a transparent acrylic. This characteristic adds to milky acrylic’s versatility, allowing it to be placed in low-light or high-backlight spaces.

Yes, acrylic is completely UV-resistant to avoid yellowing and fading. However, it is worth noting that UV and water-resistant printing techniques must be used if the image is placed on top of the acrylic, otherwise the image itself may fade, crack or yellow.
